Norwich Samaritans

The original Samaritans Norwich branch was mix of terraced house and former Gospel Church.  It was a tired building, suffering from damp and the passing of time, and needed specific consideration given its position within the local Conservation Area.  The occupation of the building had been broadly confined to the first floor, where the charity’s incredible volunteers operated the call centre for people in need.  The spaces were cramped and dark, and lacked the positivity and hope that the occupants projected on a daily basis.

The brief from the charity team was to create a modern, comfortable, inviting workspace where volunteers felt supported in their roles and could continue the incredible work the charity does in Norwich and Norfolk.  Making use of the complete building, set over two floors, and bringing natural light into the centre of the building were also key objectives.

The proposals, and the eventual delivery of the scheme, are a testament to a dedicated client, design and construction team, who have delivered a stand-out renovation project which delivers on all of the targets set out in the brief.  The first floor space is now vaulted and offers better light and space.  The introduction of the double height space creates breakout areas and allows natural light down into the ground floor.  The whole building has been transformed into an inviting and connected work space, which doubles the capacity of the charity to answer calls and help people in need.
