A military observation post built underground at Repps-With-Bastwick, near Great Yarmouth, is for sale at online auction in Norwich for a guide price of between £10,000-£20,000.

The site on Church Road, known as an observation post, was one of many built by the MOD, Ministry of Defence, during the 1950s and 1960s.

This was when the threat of nuclear war loomed as tensions grew between the US, the UK and the then Soviet Union during the period known as the ‘Cold War.’

A number of posts were built across the UK designed for people to detect and report a nuclear attack - underground in protective bunkers with cramped accommodation for up to three observers.

The bunkers were designed to withstand radiation for its inhabitants and were fully equipped with radiological instruments to record the characteristics of nuclear fallout.

By the late 1980s, with the nuclear threat diminishing, the nationwide posts went into disuse.

Trevor Blythe, Auction Manager, said: “This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of British post-war history.

“Observation posts like the one we are selling were built to provide protective, but extremely limited accommodation, for three observers in the event of a nuclear attack.”

Bidding at the online auction opens at 11am on November 12th and is scheduled to end at 11am on November 13th.
