These two dwellings sit on the edge of the Isle of Ely with long distance views over the surrounding countryside to Ely Cathedral. The site was originally a grain store, the redevelopment of which provided an opportunity to create two houses taking full advantage of the location and gently sloping site. The design of the houses, with echoes of a courtyard, took its cue from an existing courtyard complex, formerly a dairy, which had been converted to houses some time ago. The Planning strategy was to secure Class Q Permitted development of the existing buildings and then utilise a ‘Fall Back’ application to deliver new build development on the site – the value of which would be far superior to converting the existing building.
