It was built as the gatehouse to Hilton House, for renowned landscape watercolourist Peter DeWint. The artist came to Lincoln after falling in love with Harriet, the sister of his artist friend William Hilton, who came from the city. However, Mr DeWint is only thought to have travelled outside the UK once, to Normandy, so it is believed the ornate gatehouse, in the style of an Italian villa, may have been his way of bringing the Mediterranean to him, in Lincoln.
