Ornate gatehouse home designed for famous artist for sale
Fri 12 Aug 2022
A Lincoln property which was an opulent gatehouse to the home of a famous artist has gone up for sale with our Residential team.
Hilton House Lodge in Lincoln is Grade II listed and Italianate in style, being built in around 1840, situated in the lea of Lincoln castle walls. It was built as the gatehouse to Hilton House, for renowned landscape watercolourist Peter DeWint. He and his wife Harriet Hilton, hence the name, lived in the main house in the 19th century – Hilton House is now converted into apartments.
The artist came to Lincoln after falling in love with Harriet, the sister of his artist friend William Hilton, who came from the city. However, Mr DeWint is only thought to have travelled outside the UK once, to Normandy, so it is believed the ornate gatehouse, in the style of an Italian villa, may have been his way of bringing the Mediterranean to him, in Lincoln.
Now Hilton House Lodge is for sale for a guide price of £395,000 with our experts in Lincoln.
The property is for sale with no onward chain.
Inside is an entrance hall, a bay fronted reception room, a kitchen, garden room, two double bedrooms and a bathroom.
Outside it has walled and fenced gardens, with a covered arched walkway, mature trees and shrubbery along with an enclosed courtyard.
